Passport copies… Medical records… Tax documents…. If you’re like most people, you probably store these documents on Google Drive, along with a wide range of other types of personal information. While Google Drive is easy to use, its use should not come at the cost of data security and privacy. Unfortunately, Google’s security measures don’t fully protect against the possibility of your sensitive information being stolen, changed, or accessed by hackers, governments, or even Google employees when you use Google Drive.

In this article, we will answer two important questions:

How can you protect your sensitive documents and files against security and privacy risks?

1. What Security Measures Google Uses to Protect Google Drive

Imagine that you keep your private journal on Google Docs and it contains sensitive details about your life. What if a disgruntled Google employee accesses this content, sells it on the dark web, or uses it against you? Or, in the case of your medical information, are your sensitive details secure against unauthorized access? Can Google or others use it for advertising?

Google does implement various measures to protect your files and documents on Google Drive, including encryption of your data both “in transit” and “at rest,” the details of which we’ll cover below. But these measures are table stakes in online privacy — while they may be effective against external threats to some extent if implemented properly, they are not enough to provide full security and privacy for the data that you store on Google Drive.

Let’s delve into why and answer the million-dollar questions: Is Google Drive secure? What security and privacy gaps does it have?


To understand if your data on Google Drive is secure, it’s important to first understand how your data travels through Google Drive.

Your data can exist in three states and it must be protected in all states to maintain the security and privacy of your sensitive information. These three states are as follows:


When your data, such as your documents, is stored on Google servers or on your device, it is “at rest.” Put simply, this state covers situations where your data is 

 being actively accessed, transferred or used. Google Drive encrypts your data at rest using AES-256 encryption, a widely used encryption standard.


When you transfer your data from your device to Google Drive or to other third parties, that data is “in transit.” “Data in transit” refers to the transmission of data from one point to another, such as from a client device to a server or from one server to another. Google also encrypts your data using AES-256 when it’s in transit.

When your documents, files or other data are opened or accessed on Google Drive — for example, when you’re editing them — your data is “in use.” Your data is 

encrypted when it’s in use. In fact, Google has to decrypt your data using the decryption keys it holds in order for you to access it. That brings us to the next key point.

B. Google Drive does not provide client-side encryption and it holds both your data and the decryption key 

As we explained in the previous section, Google protects your data both “in transit” and “at rest” with encryption. However, when it encrypts your data, it also stores the encryption key along with your data. This is called server-side encryption — because the encryption and decryption of your data take place not on your device but instead on Google’s server — and server-side encryption exposes your data to various risks.

To make a real-world analogy, it’s as though Google has both the safe and the key. There is no security wall between your sensitive data and Google: Google employees with access privileges or government authorities can easily gain access to your data. Moreover, if Google were ever to be breached by attackers, the attackers could potentially gain access to the decryption keys for your data, since Google holds them.

A more secure alternative to server-side encryption is client-side encryption. Using client-side encryption, your data is fully encrypted before it is transferred from your local device to external servers, such as Google Drive, and only you hold the encryption and decryption keys. This means that a recipient of your data or files cannot decipher the content of your data unless you share the keys with them.

The key advantage of client-side encryption compared to server-side encryption is that it renders your data and files inaccessible to the recipient; your data is like a black-box that cannot be opened by anyone but you. If you use client-side encryption, then your data can still be stored by third parties — you can hand them a black box to store on your behalf — but they can never actually see what’s inside, and if the data ever gets into the wrong hands through an attack, it will still be completely secure because the attackers don’t have the keys either.

3. What security and privacy risks do you face when you use Google Drive?

Since Google has both your encrypted data and the decryption key that can open up your data, your data is exposed to a range of security and privacy risks:

Google employees with bad intentions can access your data

, Google fired dozens of employees between 2018 and 2020 for accessing and using confidential information without authorization. In some instances, Google employees accessed users’ sensitive personal details and deleted user data. In 

, an engineer accessed the voice logs of a teenager.

Since there is not an extra layer of security between Google and your data, Google employees with access privileges can exploit this reality and view your data.

Government agencies can require Google to disclose your data

Government agencies across the globe can subpoena Google to view user data. In the last six months of 2020, for example, Google 

 around 40,000 requests to access user data from the U.S. government.

Google can use your data for its own purposes such as advertising and analytics

When you create or store a file, document, or spreadsheet on Google Drive, the content of your documents and metadata of your documents — such as info on document formats or when they were created — can be accessed by Google and then used for Google’s own commercial purposes, including analytics and advertising.

 do not rule out the possibility that document metadata can be used for advertising or marketing purposes. And although Google 

 that the content of your files is not used for advertising purposes, it does not warrant that it will not use the content of your files for other privacy-intruding purposes, such as data analytics.

4. How to eliminate those security and privacy risks with end-to-end encryption

To eliminate the security and privacy risks we listed above, you need a type of security that guards your data wherever it goes and from whomever might try to access it — regardless of whether it’s in transit, in use, or at rest on a third-party company’s servers.

As discussed, once your data ends up on Google servers, you lose control over your data because Google, its employees, and government authorities can get access to your data. Furthermore, because Google holds the keys, if they ever lose them in an attack, your data will also be compromised.

If you’d like to protect against these risks, you need a way to ensure that your data is inaccessible to any third parties, including your service providers, after it leaves your device.

This is where a superior type of encryption technology comes into play: end-to-end encryption.

5. Overcoming privacy and security risks with Skiff

Cloud storage is a service that allows users to save files online so that they can be accessed from any internet-connected

Events you receive in your Skiff Mail inbox will automatically appear in your Skiff Calendar. Likewise, any invite you send externally to other Skiff users or external users will integrate directly into their calendars, including RSVPs (yes, no, maybe) on events.

. Skiff Drive is a platform for end-to-end encrypted file storage and sharing. You can upload, view, share, and download files of any type, from documents to Excel spreadsheets. In this blog, we’ll walk through some of the capabilities of the new Skiff Drive mobile app.

Our digital files store more personal information than our homes. From medical records and personal journals to job applications and client reports, drive storage holds our life’s work and history.

Skiff is an end-to-end encrypted, privacy-first workspace for your most sensitive work. Given this mission to empower the world to work more freely and effectively - to be people, and not products - drive storage for files and data is a core, critical part of this mission.

Earlier this year, we launched the first 

 of Skiff Drive to enable uploading and viewing files on the web. Today, we make Skiff Drive simpler, more powerful, and more intuitive with the launch of an end-to-end encrypted file storage app for iOS.

Cloud storage enables users to upload files, data, and other information into servers operated by cloud providers. These cloud storage providers are responsible for keeping the data available and accessible, and the physical environment protected and running. People and organizations buy or lease storage capacity from the providers to store user, organization, or application data.

Cloud storage services can be utilized from a public network, private network, or hybrid network of both public and private access. Cloud storage often provides data redundancy, storing identical copies of data in multiple physical locations to protect data in the event of equipment failure or natural disasters. Users can access data stored on remote servers by using a web browser or a mobile app.

As we store more and more sensitive or personal data in the cloud, it becomes critically important to make sure that our data is properly secured. End-to-end encrypted cloud storage is the highest standard in cloud storage security and ensures that your data is safe from prying eyes.

By encrypting your data before it is uploaded to the cloud with keys that are known only to you, Skiff Drive will ensure that only you and shared recipients can ever access your data. This is especially important for businesses who may store customer or client data in the cloud. By encrypting that data, businesses can help ensure that their customers' information is safe, increasing trust for all users.

Immediately on opening the Skiff Drive app, the interface allows for direct upload of files using the upload button in the bottom right corner. Simply tap this button to start uploading files to your Workspace.

After you’ve selected a file, you are taken to an in-app viewer, which can preview most types of commonly shared files. In the top right corner, the Share button allows you to share the file with other Skiff users, or to generate a shareable link that can be transmitted in any messaging app (or via 

On Skiff Drive, you can also download files to your device, including in the new iOS app. This enables sending, receiving, and downloading files for offline use or later viewing.

Every Skiff user is granted 10 GB in free storage for mail, files, notes, and more. For more storage, you can upgrade to the Pro plan for 100 GB of storage, and 1 TB of storage on the Business plan.

Skiff Drive iOS app launched

Skiff Domains take all the pain out of domain registration for your own privacy-first, end-to-end encrypted mail address. Instead of configuring MX, CNAME, and TXT records, you can now simply sign up, open Skiff Mail, and purchase a domain that will be automatically configured to receive mail privately on Skiff.

Skiff Domains help you go from Mail users to a professional custom domain - for your business, family, or personal projects - in seconds.

To start, open Skiff Mail, and click into the settings page inside Skiff Mail. Then, click on the “custom domains” tab on the left. Or, click this link to go directly to custom domain settings →

From this settings page, you can create, purchase, or manage all of your custom domains. This includes adding domains that you already own using DNS record verification, adding aliases for domains that are already verified, and purchasing new domains on Skiff.

To start with buying a domain, click “Buy custom domain.” Then, you’ll be prompted with an input field to search for a new domain. Once you’ve entered a search term, you’ll view suggested domains with different endings. Once you’ve selected your preferred domain, simply click on it, and you will be redirected to a checkout page to sign up for a subscription for your domain.

After checkout is complete - congratulations! Your domain is now ready for use on Skiff Mail. Note that you may have to wait 3-5 minutes for DNS records to propagate.

To purchase a domain through Skiff Domains, you’ll have to be a 

 subscriber with access to custom domains.

Then, follow the guide above to purchase your domain. After waiting a few minutes, it will be set up with all needed DNS records for sending and receiving mail. Then, visit the alias tab (via 

) and click “add alias” under your domain to add email addresses. Anyone shared on your workspace will also be able to use aliases at this domain.

Managing a domain name and DNS records can be frustrating and tedious, as you have to transfer them from the original source, wait for them to update, and fix any typos or errors. Purchasing a one-click domain through Skiff avoids all of this complexity, allowing you to simply click and checkout to send email from a custom domains.

Adding aliases with a Skiff domain is as simple as using any other custom domain. Once purchased and verified, you’ll see your Skiff domain at the bottom of the custom domains settings page (inside the “Manage domains” section). There, click the … dropdown and “add alias;” you’ll then be able to add any alias, including a one-character alias.

If you cancel your subscription, your domain will no longer be renewed. As long as your subscription and payment information is active, your domain will continue to be renewed and work with Skiff Mail.

Yes! Any Skiff Domains purchased domain works natively for Skiff Calendar as well. All invites will be sent from the alias you’ve set as your default email alias from inside Skiff Mail.
